Cue grain filler for ash pool and snooker cue shafts

Crafted Cues Cue Grain Filler is designed for ash cue shafts where the natural open grain has started to feel rough, uneven or tired through regular use and maintenance.

Ash is naturally an open-grained timber. Grain filler helps work into those grain lines, creating a smoother surface and helping restore the appearance and definition of the shaft before oiling and finishing.

It is particularly useful as part of a deeper cue restoration or maintenance routine where the shaft has first been properly cleaned and is being prepared for cue oil and finishing.

How to use Crafted Cues Cue Grain Filler

  1. Make sure the cue shaft has been thoroughly cleaned and is completely dry before applying the grain filler.
  2. Apply a small amount of grain filler to a clean piece of kitchen roll.
  3. Work the grain filler firmly into the shaft, moving the kitchen roll up and down and around the cue so the product works into the open grain.
  4. Leave the grain filler on the cue for approximately 10-15 minutes.
  5. Use a clean piece of kitchen roll to remove the grain filler residue.
  6. Leave the shaft to dry for approximately 24 hours.
  7. Once dry, buff the shaft with a clean lint-free cloth to remove any remaining filler.
  8. The shaft can then be treated with cue oil as the next stage of the maintenance process.

Why use grain filler on an ash cue?

The distinctive grain lines in an ash shaft are part of what makes the wood so recognisable, but ash naturally has a more open grain structure than some other cue woods.

Over time, cleaning, wear and general use can leave those grain lines feeling more noticeable through the bridge hand. Grain filler helps work into the open grain and create a smoother, more even base for the next stages of cue maintenance.

It can also help bring the grain definition back to life, making it useful for players restoring an older cue or simply maintaining an ash shaft they want to keep looking and feeling its best.

Where does grain filler fit into cue care?

Grain filler should be used on a clean, dry ash shaft. Start with a dedicated cue cleaner to remove chalk, oils and grime. Once the shaft has been cleaned and any grain-filling work has been completed and fully dried, cue oil can be used to nourish and condition the wood.
